Protest again the expansion of an RWE lignite coal mine

Greta Thunberg has been detained by police at a climate protest in Germany. The 20 year old Swedish activists joined thousands in protesting against the expansion of an RWE lignite coal mine that would destroy the village of Lutzerath. According to police and the coal mining firm, the protesters were endangering themselves by getting too close to the edge of an open pit mine.

This was one of many anti-expansion protests taking place throughout Germany. Several protesters in Dusseldorf protested by gluing themselves to a government building, others glued themselves to a street in Cologne and roughly 120 activists overtook railroad tracks that connected to an RWE power plant near Rommerskirchen. Activists say the village, which has been evacuated and sealed off, has become a symbol for their fight against coal burning for energy, which increases emissions.
